Community Service Award by the American College of Gastroenterology

THE FIRST INDIAN GASTROENTEROLOGIST AND THE FIRST ONE OUTSIDE AMERICA (NON AMERICAN) to be honoured with the “COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD – by the American College of Gastroenterology on “Padma Shri Awardee, Prof. T.S. Chandrasekar, Chennai based Interventional Gastroenterologist”.

THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF GASTROENTEROLOGY (ACG), an USA based medical association of gastroenterologists, founded in 1932 with over 14,000 physicians from 86 countries as members, has honoured Prof. T.S. Chandrasekar, Chairman & Chief Interventional Gastroenterologist of MedIndia Hospitals, Chennai, with the “COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD”. Dr. Sunanda V. Kane, President, American College of Gastroenterology, presented the award to Prof. Chandrasekar during the Annual Scientific Meeting of the ACG, on 26th October, 2019, at San Antonio, Texas, USA.

The ACG in its Award Souvenir has noted that this award is a recognition of Dr. Chandrasekar’s dedication to serving populations in need, in his local community at Chennai, India and for improving the Health Care Access for the Underserved Citizens of India and for the spirit of service and innovation. Some of these first of its kind initiatives include, Braille Charts for the Blind and Health Cards for the Deaf on Hygienic Health Tips, nutritional deficiency rectification, Toll Free Digestive Diseases Helpline, QR coded life-saving emergency medical care card (emc2), public information website for digestive diseases awareness and Short Films on G.I. adjacent topics such as Hepatitis, alcohol use disorder recovery, personal hygiene and environmental issues such as water conservation and air pollution.

Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP – London)

Dr. T.S. Chandrasekar has been conferred with the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London on 10th September, 2019, in view of the recognition of his exceptional professional and personal contributions to the field of medicine, especially gastroenterology and pioneering efforts in academics, research, skill development and medico-social relief initiatives, carried out with distinction over a period of more than 3 decades. Dr. Chandrasekar is only one of the few Indians to be decorated with the fellowships of all the 4 royal institutes of Medicine, namely London, Edinburg, Glasgow and Ireland, which is considered a mark of excellence throughout the world.

Masters of the World Gastroenterology Organization Award (MWGO)

WORLD GASTROENTEROLOGY ORGANIZATION, Milwaukee, USA, one of the world’s premier and foremost academic institutions for excellence in Gastroenterology & Endoscopy, has honoured Dr. T.S. Chandrasekar, Chairman & Chief Interventional Gastroenterologist of MedIndia Hospitals, Chennai, with the “MASTERS OF THE WORLD GASTROENTEROLOGY ORGANIZATION AWARD”, considered a mark of excellence throughout the world. Prof. Dr. David Bjorkman, Chair, MWGO Award Selection Committee and Past President, World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO), presented the award to Prof. Chandrasekar at Istanbul on 23rd September, 2019, It is laudable and noteworthy to mention here that Dr. Chandrasekar is THE THIRD INDIAN GASTROENTEROLOGIST TO RECEIVE THE AWARD.

This recognition has been conferred on him by the WORLD GASTROENTEROLOGY ORGANIZATION, in view of his exceptional professional contributions to the field of gastroenterology and its related disciplines, and especially his efforts in the less well-developed regions of the world and in service to the populations WGO is focused on. This is the highest honor WGO can bestow and is granted only to those individuals who have provided outstanding dedication to the mission of the WGO and achieved distinction in such areas as scholarly research, teaching, service to WGO and the community at large.

Renny Abraham Tanker Foundation Love for Service Award

Dr. T. S. Chandrasekar, Chairman & Chief Gastroenterologist, MedIndia Hospitals, Nungambakkam, Chennai was awarded the prestigious Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for medical services beyond the call of duty and for serving the underprivileged, by the Chennai based TANKER Foundation, a prestigious NGO, in January, 2019.
